Cardinals TE Trey McBride clears air about his ‘no fans in Arizona’ comment

GLENDALE — Cardinals tight end Trey McBride found himself in hot water with Arizona fans for his Bussin’ With the Boys podcast interview this offseason.

They weren’t upset with McBride’s comments about how the Cardinals low-balled him with an initial contract extension offer of $12 million a year. If anything, many fans agreed he should have gotten a better offer from the jump.

It wasn’t about McBride’s thoughts of potentially playing elsewhere when that number came from the team, either.

What really ruffled fans’ feathers was McBride’s “there’s no Arizona fans in Arizona” comment when talking about the transplant nature of the state and how a lack of winning has impacted homefield advantage.

While McBride certainly has a point in both regards — State Farm Stadium is usually littered with the opposing fanbase (especially divisional and NFC North) and Arizona is truly a melting pot of team allegiances — the tight end knows he misspoke.

“I probably shouldn’t have said that. It came out wrong,” McBride said Saturday. “The fanbase is great. We have a tremendous fanbase. Arizona’s been here, loyal fans to all sports teams here. We’re very lucky to have a lot of these guys and we’re going to have a great season, we’re going to win games and we’re going to make sure those fans have something proud to cheer for.

“I love it here in Arizona and I hope they love me, too. It’s a special place, the fans are great and I’m excited for this year to give them something to be proud of.”

No one ever wants to willingly sign up to watch their team lose on Sunday, especially when there’s the added cost of just going to a game.

For many, watching from home has become the norm as Arizona continues to struggle in the win column.

If the Cardinals want their fans packing the stands of State Farm Stadium on a weekly basis, the franchise is going to have to do something it hasn’t done in years: Win and win consistently.

McBride has a major role in that.
