Training camp takeaways: Reggie Virgil makes his case for best catch of Cardinals camp

The competition throughout the Arizona Cardinals wide receivers room continues to impress this training camp.

GLENDALE — The Arizona Cardinals are going to have tough decisions to make when it comes to the wide receivers room.

Monday was just the latest example, with 2026 fifth-rounder Reggie Virgil popping off throughout most of practice.

He and rookie quarterback Carson Beck linked up for multiple touchdowns during 11-on-11 work.

They weren’t run-of-the-mill scores, either, with a 40-yard strike to Virgil standing out above them all.

That wasn’t his best catch of the afternoon, though.

Operating in the two-minute drill, Virgil almost went full Odell Beckham Jr. with an insane one-handed catch to move the chains.

The sneaky underrated part of it all? His wherewithal to make the play in crunch time and get back to the line of scrimmage instead of wasting seconds with a celebration — even if it deserved it.

It wasn’t perfect — with a drop in the end zone mixed in there — but it was damn close.

Virgil is going to be fun to watch this preseason as a player looking to separate himself in a crowded room that has also seen Ihmir Smith-Marsette, Bryson Green and Xavier Weaver have their fair share of plays this camp.

Cardinals starters not practicing

Paris Johnson Jr., Michael Wilson and Budda Baker appeared to have the day off on Monday.

Wilson and Baker seemed just fine as they remained engaged on the sideline.

Marvin Harrison Jr. continues to climb

Harrison has looked a lot better since his case of the drops last week.

The biggest things have been consistency catching the rock and confidence, because his separation has been there all camp.

His impressive diving catch on an absolute moonshot from quarterback Jacoby Brissett was a good reminder of that on Monday.

Virgil may have the best catch of camp, but Harrison definitely threw his hat in the ring with that one.

Young 1s

With Johnson not practicing and Arizona mixing up the offensive line, rookies Chase Bisontis and Jayden Williams were in there with the 1s a little more than normal. Williams got some looks at left tackle, while Bisontis was at right guard.

Elijah Jones and Kei’Trel Clark pester

Jones and Clark had great days on Monday.

Jones came down with an interception off Beck and nearly had another two plays later.

Clark, meanwhile, had multiple passes defensed and was sticking to his assignments regularly.

Like the wide receivers room, Arizona’s cornerbacks room has been filled with competition this camp.

Carson Beck’s up-and-down day

Beck came back down to earth a little bit on Monday after having arguably his best day of camp the day prior.

He started off the day with the interception to Jones before settling in and throwing some touchdown strikes to Virgil, and of course, being on the other side of the wideout’s two-minute drill snag.

Things didn’t end well for the rookie quarterback, with yet another pick to end the drive.

More tape to learn from before the preseason takes hold.

Easy now!

Trey McBride was very much himself at camp on Monday.

There was, however, a moment where just about everyone was holding their breath.

During 11-on-11 work, McBride was in a high-speed collision with safety Andrew Wingard.

McBride stayed on the ground before eventually hopping up.

Despite the hard hit, the tight end was back catching touchdowns in no time.
