How Michael Wilson’s contract extension could impact Marvin Harrison Jr.’s future payday

Much like Cardinals WR Michael Wilson was this offseason, Marvin Harrison Jr. will be eligible for a contract extension beginning next offseason.

TEMPE — The Arizona Cardinals got a huge to-do item out of the way Thursday with the three-year contract extension for wide receiver Michael Wilson.

Living up to the expectations first-year head coach Mike LaFleur has for the wideout, Wilson can now focus on football and family without any lingering contract negotiations overhead.

It’s a day to celebrate for the organization and players alike, especially given his trajectory as Arizona’s WR1. It also makes things a whole lot more interesting when talking about Marvin Harrison Jr.’s future.

Much like Wilson this offseason, Harrison will be eligible for a contract extension beginning next offseason.

It was already a huge year for Harrison to prove he was worth the No. 4 overall pick in 2024 and can be that WR1 of the future. Now, the magnifying glass is on him even more.

Having another inconsistent or injury-filled season is likely not going to have Arizona’s front office clamoring to get back to the negotiating table any time soon.

There’s also offensive lineman Paris Johnson Jr. drifting in the wind for his own contract extension after getting his fifth-year option picked up.

And even if Harrison did pull off the bounce back, just how eager would Arizona be in piling on more money in the wide receivers room?

As former Cardinals executive and player Adrian Wilson pointed out Wednesday, allocating that amount of funds in one spot can hurt a team elsewhere on the roster.

Just take a look at what the Cincinnati Bengals are doing.

Handing out a pair of massive contracts to Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins last offseason, the pair count $52 million, $63 million and $74 million against the cap the next three seasons.

That’s a lot of cheddar between two pass catchers.

Joe Burrow only made it to eight games and impacted Cincinnati’s 6-11 record last year. But it was the bottom-of-the-barrel defense that stood out like a sore thumb.

That $47 million the Bengals had tied up in the wide receivers room could have come in handy with defensive upgrades, or at the very least provided some wiggle room.

And as we’ve all seen, Arizona still has plenty of holes to fill roster-wise, highlighted by pass rusher and offensive line.

Getting Wilson’s deal done is a great step in the right direction, but it also might mean more of a waiting game for Harrison down the line even if he can make good on his Year 3 breakout.

Picking up Harrison’s fifth-year option, which will be north of $20 million, would mean keeping the wide receiver around through 2028 on his current rookie deal.

Wilson’s extension now runs through 2029.

If Wilson regresses by the time Harrison is getting a long-term deal done, this potential issue might not even matter.

But outside of injuries, that just doesn’t seem like it’s going to be the case for Wilson given his continued ascension and how he’s expected to be utilized in Mike LaFleur’s system.

Franchise tags are placeholders to consider, too, but they also aren’t getting any cheaper. Higgins signed a $26.5 million tag before getting his extension last year.

The salary cap is only going to increase year over year. So are the price tags.

If Wilson continues to flourish, and MHJ continues to underachieve, it could be buh-bye time for the #4 pick in 2027.
