Diamondbacks make series of roster moves ahead of Corbin Burnes’ return

With ace pitcher Corbin Burnes returning to action Tuesday night against the Kansas City Royals, the Arizona Diamondbacks reshuffled the deck with a handful of roster moves.

In addition to Burnes’ reinstatement from the injured list, right-handed reliever Kade Strowd was called up from Triple-A Reno. Pitchers Gerardo Carrillo and Jose Cabrera were both optioned to the Aces to make room for the other arms.

Carrillo pitched 17.1 innings across 13 games for the D-backs, mainly in low-leverage situations. He had a 1.06 ERA going into September, but gave up three earned runs in each of his last two outings while only recording one out to balloon his ERA to 4.15. He came in to start the bottom of the 10th inning in Monday’s game that nearly saw the D-backs squander a 5-0 lead.

Cabrera made five spot starts for Arizona from June 21 to Aug. 27 to help take pressure off an injured rotation. He then made two relief appearances in the last week, ending his stint with the team thus far with an 0-3 record and a 4.33 ERA.

Strowd was part of the return for Blaze Alexander in the Feb. 5 trade with the Baltimore Orioles. He’s only appeared in one game in a D-backs uniform, pitching one inning and giving up an earned run in a 14-1 loss to the Washington Nationals on June 5.

Burnes and the Diamondbacks look to take the series in Kansas City later tonight, still a half game ahead of the San Diego Padres for the final NL Wild Card spot.
