Mark Williams undergoes left shoulder surgery, will miss extended period of time

Phoenix Suns center Mark Williams underwent surgery Thursday to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder, Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro reported.

ESPN’s Shams Charania was first to report the injury, which occurred during an offseason workout.

“A timetable for his return to play will be established at a later date,” the Suns said in a statement.

Williams, 24, has struggled with the injury bug throughout his four-year career.

Despite playing in a career-high 60 regular-season games during his first year in Phoenix this past season, a foot injury kept him out of the Suns’ first-round playoff series against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Williams entered restricted free agency at the end of the season, and Phoenix retained him with a three-year, $38 million contract.

The big man tandem of 2025 No. 10 overall pick Khaman Maluach and Oso Ighodaro will see an increase in minutes and responsibility during Williams’ absence.
