Bobby Hurley ejected in second half of rivalry game against Arizona

Bobby Hurley almost made it through his first game as ASU’s head coach against in-state rival No. 8 Arizona. Hurley was ejected with a minute left in the game.

Arguing with the referees for most of the game, Hurley let it all loose after Tra Holder tried taking a charge on an Arizona guard, but was instead called for a blocking foul.

“I wouldn’t have changed anything I did today, in terms of anything that happened,” Hurley said after the game.

Senior Willie Atwood says he appreciated Hurley fighting for them.

“He fights for us. He wanted us to play hard, he wishes he was out on the court too,” Atwood said. “We try to get the fire from him.”

Arizona pulled away to start the second half, but the Sun Devils made a late push. After receiving his first technical just minutes earlier, Hurley picked up his second technical in a six-point game with under a minute to go.

“Ultimately that intensity rubs off on us,” senior Gerry Blakes said.

Ultimately though, ASU lost the game 94-82. Gabe York led the Wildcats in scoring with 22 points, and Holder led the Sun Devils with 24 points.

Both schools travel to California for their next games: Arizona will be (13-3) at UCLA and ASU (10-4) at USC.
