Is Kolb really an improvement over Derek Anderson?

Aug 1, 2011, 7:48 PM | Updated: 9:32 pm

It was generally thought that Kevin Kolb, at the very least, would be better than Derek Anderson.

Maybe you should think again.

According to ESPN’s KC Joyner, the numbers don’t exactly back up the claim, as he points to Kolb’s overall yards per attempt (6.2) as well as a 4.0 bad decision rate, a number that is determined by how often a QB’s mistake leads to a turnover or near turnover.

To put those figures into perspective, consider that Anderson posted better marks in both categories (6.5 YPA, 2.6 percent bad decision rate) and did so without the benefit of playing with the explosive Philadelphia offense.

Well, that’s probably not what Cardinals fans want to read.

At any rate, all it really does is speak to Kolb’s relative inexperience. Kolb has thrown just 319 passes in his career, while Anderson has needed all of 1,436 to prove that he is, well, not very good.

So yes, while Kolb’s numbers up to this point aren’t particularly impressive, there’s still plenty of time for him to prove he belongs in the NFL.
