Cardinals off-season not as impressive as thought?

The Arizona Cardinals made a lot of moves once the lockout was lifted, most of which have been well received by pretty much anyone who follows football.

And really, how could they not be? Adding Kevin Kolb, Todd Heap, Daryn Colledge, among others, showed the Cardinals were ready and willing to spend money in order to fill glaring holes.

Great job? Not according to Scouts Inc’s Matt Williamson, on ESPN.com.

In grading all the moves so far, Williamson was kind enough to give the Cardinals a C+ for their efforts, trailing Seattle, Washington, Carolina, Detroit and St. Louis.

Analysis: Arizona may very well have overspent for Kolb. He is far from a sure thing, and I’m not exactly in his corner. But his game has upside, and he can be an effective passer while he continues to develop if the Cards surround him with a strong supporting cast. I have no complaints about the skill players in this regard, but Arizona’s offensive line still leaves a lot to be desired. Colledge could help, but he didn’t have a great season last year. Also, Colledge and Sendlein are both athletic and undersized, which isn’t really a great fit in this offensive scheme. Lutui is anything but undersized and failed his physical in Cincinnati because of weight issues. He returns to Arizona, but that might not be a good thing. Like Colledge, Marshall didn’t have a good season in 2010. If he can stay on the field, Bradley is a proven producer. He has the size and physicality to thrive next to Daryl Washington as the heavier inside ‘backer in Arizona’s 3-4 scheme.

Williamson does note that the defense has a chance to “vastly” improve and says better QB play will benefit the entire roster, but his overall grade seems a little off.

Sure, not everyone buys into Kevin Kolb and yeah, maybe Todd Heap’s injury issues are a concern, but overall the Cardinals did a nice job of changing over a roster that won just 5 games last season.

And yes, while it would have been nice to get a player like Nnamdi Asomugha, the fact that they didn’t should not be held against them.

Then again, maybe the Cardinals’ grade of a C+ isn’t unfair, but when you put it up against the Redskins B, who earned a B, and the Seahawks, who were given an A-, you start to wonder who in the Cardinals organization ran over Williamson’s dog.

After all, this is the same Redskins team that jettisoned Donovan McNabb so that they could make room for John Beck or Rex Grossman, and it’s a Seahawks team that dumped Matt Hasselbeck in favor of Tarvaris Jackson.

Questionable grade for the Cardinals? Perhaps. Questionable grader, in general? Seems likely.
