Diamondbacks collect autographs, wear decorated cleats for Childhood Cancer Awareness Day

PHOENIX — Arizona Diamondbacks players gathered outside the home plate dugout to collect some special new baseball cards from children of the Arizona Cancer Foundation.

Saturday was Childhood Cancer Awareness Day at Chase Field, and D-backs pitcher Merrill Kelly hosted kids for a second annual reverse autograph session.

Kids had personalized baseball cards with fun facts about them that they signed for players who stopped by, while also collecting autographs on their hats and jerseys from the athletes.

Additionally, the players wore cleats decorated by kids at Phoenix Children’s, whom the D-backs visited on Aug. 31, to raise awareness. 

The cleats are up for auction online to benefit Phoenix Children’s.

Young patients from Phoenix Children’s took the field with the Diamondbacks after 11-year old cancer survivor Immanol Moreno threw out the ceremonial first pitch.

Before first pitch against the Texas Rangers, the ballclub presented $100,000 to Phoenix Children’s.

Saturday was an important and special night at the ballpark for young warriors who are more than deserving of it.
