By the numbers: Diamondbacks pour on the runs in Mexico City Series

The Arizona Diamondbacks trailed 6-0 on Sunday to the San Diego Padres, having gone through 11 innings without scoring a run and losing three players to injury at that point in the Mexico City Series.

Less than two hours later, third baseman Nolan Arenado snared a diving catch to cap the most invigorating win of the season for Arizona, a 12-7 comeback victory with key contributions up and down the lineup.

Given the dramatics from Ryan Thompson’s pick-off to Tim Tawa’s grand slam to Ildemaro Vargas extending his hitting streak, let’s revisit the win with some key numbers:

By the numbers: Diamondbacks earn signature win

Five comebacks of 6+ runs

The Diamondbacks have had a knack for drama (leading or trailing), as they have mounted five comeback victories after trailing by six or more runs since 2022:

• 6/28/2022: Six-run comeback vs. Padres
• 8/29/2022: Seven-run comeback vs. Phillies (Corbin Carroll’s debut)
• 7/29/2024: Six-run comeback vs. Nationals
• 6/5/2025: Six-run comeback vs. Braves
• 4/26/2026: Six-run comeback vs. Padres

Arizona has also played quite a few games with massive swings against San Diego in recent memory.

Last year, the D-backs overcame a four-run deficit in the ninth inning to walk-off the Padres, and in 2024, they scored six runs in the ninth inning (remember the Alek Thomas grand slam?) to take lead at Petco Park before blowing it in the bottom half.

9 home runs

A storyline entering the Mexico City Series was the altitude, as Estadio Alfredo Harp Helu sits 2,000 feet higher above sea level than Coors Field in Denver.

There were no 460-foot blasts during the series, but there were nine home runs hit in two games between the teams. The Diamondbacks benefitted from the long ball in their comeback (after surrendering three to fall behind).

Jose Fernandez got it started by breaking through against Padres starter Michael King in the fifth inning. King had looked otherwise unhittable, and Fernandez’s wing at least broke the ice of Arizona’s scoring drought.

Vargas roped one into the right-field corner an inning later to extend his hitting streak to 23 games and provide another spark. That was Vargas’ sixth home run of the year, tying a career high. There is a lot of time for him to eclipse that mark.

After building an inning in the seventh against the San Diego bullpen, Tawa came up with a chance to bring the D-backs back into the game, and he lined his first career grand slam to left field. It was Tawa’s first home run of the season and Arizona’s second grand slam (Carroll against Toronto).

The Diamondbacks improved to 2-0 with two five-plus-run comebacks when Fernandez homers this season, as he hit two during a win over the Detroit Tigers. He collected three hits in each game, a bit of symmetry as he has continued to provide some electricity for the lineup as a rookie.

23-game hitting streak

Vargas is one hit away from tying Tony Womack for the third-longest hitting streak in franchise history.

Paul Goldschmidt is next with 26 games and Luis Gonzalez atop the list at 30.

Vargas also extended his hitting streak to start this season at 20, tied with 2012 Pablo Sandoval for the longest in MLB since 2006. Edgar Renteria put together a 23-game hitting streak in 2006 to start the year, the longest of the 21st century, according to Sarah Langs.

Vargas has hit a double, a triple and four home runs in his last five games, taking over the team lead in wins above replacement with 1.4.

7-8-9 hitters

With multi-hit games from Arenado and Thomas along with Tawa’s grand slam, the bottom of the Diamondbacks’ order was a catalyst in tying the series against San Diego. And with Arenado and Thomas riding hitting streaks — five and seven games, respectively — Arizona’s bottom third of the lineup is working its way toward being one of the most productive in MLB.

After Sunday’s games, Diamondbacks hitting in the seven, eight and nine spots have sported a combined OPS of .723, the fifth highest in baseball behind the Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta Braves, Chicago Cubs and Padres.

Yes, all five come from the National League, which is not surprising considering seven of the top nine teams by record are NL teams so far this season.

13 runs allowed

The negatives from the weekend had to do with run prevention, and not only because the elevation difference.

Arizona committed four errors in the two games, with a fielding error from Geraldo Perdomo on Saturday sticking out, and allowed 13 runs. Walks were an issue on Saturday (five), while Ryne Nelson had another day to forget on Sunday (5 IP, 6 ER).

The D-backs have surrendered 45 runs over the past six games.

39,301 fans

The Diamondbacks had not played regular season baseball in Mexico before, and the ballpark drew 39,301 fans for the two games. They were home games for Arizona, although there were a lot of Padres fans — and even an intro video for San Diego closer Mason Miller on Saturday.

That said, D-backs leadership commented on the importance of planting a flag in Mexico. Perhaps Sunday’s effort helped with that.

In addition, players from both teams participated in a PLAY BALL event with local children.
