Diamondbacks trade Jose Castillo to Mets, option Joe Mantiply to Triple-A

The Arizona Diamondbacks traded left-handed reliever Jose Castillo to the New York Mets for cash considerations on Thursday, the Mets announced.

Castillo had been designated for assignment by Arizona on Monday in a wave of moves corresponding to top prospect Jordan Lawlar’s call-up.

The move came one day after Castillo’s second straight outing with three earned runs given up.

This month was his first time back in the majors after spending all of 2024 rehabbing an ACL injury.

Arizona also optioned lefty reliever Joe Mantiply to Triple-A Reno on Thursday, per the team’s transactions page.

April 5 was the last time Mantiply took the mound without giving up a run, surrendering 14 earned runs in the 6.1 innings (six games) he’s pitched since.

His numbers on the season sit at 15.83 ERA with a 3.0 WHIP. He has given up just three walks but has allowed hits to nearly half of the rest of the batters he’s faced (26 of 55).

Diamondbacks bullpen on the mend

The moves come as Justin Martinez nears his return from shoulder inflammation that forced him onto the 15-day injured list on May 1.

Fellow righty reliever Kendall Graveman made his season debut on Tuesday, giving up no hits and one walk en route to a 14-pitch scoreless inning.

Southpaw A.J. Puk remains on the 60-day IL.
