Corbin Carroll becomes the Diamondbacks’ all-time triples king

In a testament to his absurd speed, his skill and aggressive baserunning, Corbin Carroll passed Stephen Drew for the Diamondbacks' record.

PHOENIX — It took Corbin Carroll less than four seasons of service time to become the Arizona Diamondbacks’ all-time leader in triples, which he accomplished with the 53rd of his career on Friday at Tropicana Field.

Carroll smoked an 0-2 changeup off Tampa Bay Rays starter Nick Martinez and nearly hit it over the right-field wall. Carroll rolled into third base without a throw, which is typical for his triples.

An oddity was that his helmet stayed on the whole time.

In a testament to his absurd speed, his skill offensively and aggressive baserunning, Carroll passed Stephen Drew for the franchise lead with a chance to extend it beyond anything possible for players behind him.

Drew hit 52 triples in 773 games, while it took Carroll 566 to pass him. And Carroll is only 25 years old.

Carroll’s franchise triples lead when it settles has the potential become one of those unbreakable records that live in local baseball lore. He is under contract through at least the 2030 season.

It never fails to bring the crowd at Chase Field to a rouse when Carroll shoots a line drive into a gap or down the line, as it feels inevitable he will reach third. He hits another gear between first and second base where it just looks bionic, making a face that looks like he’s putting every ounce of effort he has into each step.

Carroll has recorded double-digit triples in four straight seasons, dating back to his Rookie of the Year campaign in 2023.

How can Corbin Carroll become an all-time triples savant?

Carroll is already close to becoming the active triples leader, as he is zooming toward Mike Trout and Starling Marte (55 each).

Major League Baseball’s all-time triples record does not look attainable because the game is different.

If you went to Baseball Reference for all-time triples leaders, 23 of the 24 photos shown at the top of the page are in black and white. The 26 players with the most triples each played before the Integration Era (1947), many of whom played in ballparks that looked a lot different than they do today.

Chase Field is a triples-friendly ballpark with its deep corners, but not like Navin Field in 1914, all-time triples leader Sam Crawford’s home during a 26-triple season. Center field was 467 feet away from home plate!

Roberto Clemente owns the Integration Era record with 166 triples, which means Carroll is 32% of the way there. Jose Reyes holds the 21st century lead for three-baggers with 131, and Carroll is 40% of the way to that.

He is the only reason for me. I don't even bother checking the score.

CC is one of the few reasons I check the DB box score.
