Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Ryne Nelson will start in the series opener against the New York Mets on Monday, according to azcentral’s Nick Piecoro.

Nelson gets the ball with Corbin Burnes out for Monday’s game as he deals with right shoulder inflammation.

Monday’s game at Chase Field will mark Nelson’s first start of 2025 after pitching out of the bullpen to start the season. He will be able to throw between 80-85 pitches.

Nelson started 25 games in 2024, posting a 10-6 record with a 4.24 ERA, 125 strikeouts and a 1.25 WHIP.

In seven games this season, Nelson has pitched 17 innings with a 5.82 ERA, 20 strikeouts and a 1.18 WHIP.

Nelson threw 122 pitches over his last two games, most recently on Tuesday at Citi Field against the Mets. He threw four hitless innings with three strikeouts and two walks in the D-backs’ 8-3 loss to the Mets.

Diamondbacks’ Tommy Henry likely slides into Ryne Nelson’s role

Prior to the D-backs’ 11-9 win against the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday, Arizona called up left-hander Tommy Henry from Triple-A Reno. Righty reliever Scott McGough was optioned to Reno in a corresponding move.

Henry pitched from the bullpen twice for the D-backs last year, allowing seven earned runs on eight hits and five walks over 6.1 innings.

All of Henry’s appearances in Reno this season have been as a starter, posting an 8.53 ERA and 1.86 WHIP in six games.
