Diamondbacks win series at Dodger Stadium, earn winning record on daunting road trip

The Arizona Diamondbacks are going to come home from a seven-game road trip against National League powerhouses in Milwaukee and Los Angeles with a winning record.

After a couple valiant comeback efforts in Milwaukee fell short to start the trip, the Diamondbacks have won four games in a row, splitting their series against the Brewers and winning the set at Dodger Stadium.

On Saturday, Eduardo Rodriguez blanked the Dodgers through six innings, a bounce-back performance after his 2.1-inning disaster against the Brewers on Monday. Arizona’s defense was tremendous, and the bats finally broke out late with six runs in the final three innings for a 6-1 victory.

Corbin Carroll broke a 0-0 stalemate with a solo home run (28) in the seventh inning, and the D-backs tacked on two more after doubles by Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Blaze Alexander. Ildemaro Vargas broke the game open with a 423-foot, three-run blast in the ninth inning to send Dodger fans to the parking lot.

The Diamondbacks are 9-4 at Dodger Stadium since the 2023 National League Division Series, and they will get a chance to sweep their division foes on Sunday.

Arizona is 17-11 since the trade deadline, and it moved to one game under .500 at 68-69.

Rodriguez dueled Dodgers starter Tyler Glasnow on Saturday, who did not allow a hit through five innings.

While Glasnow was perfect through three, Rodriguez nearly matched him with one hit.

Rodriguez faced some real trouble in the fifth and sixth innings. The Dodgers had runners on second and third with no outs in the fifth, but Arizona’s defense picked up Rodriguez.

Gurriel cut down Enrique Hernandez at home plate from left field on a would-be Shohei Ohtani sacrifice fly. Hernandez neglected to slide, giving catcher Gabriel Moreno the chance to apply the tag.

Mookie Betts followed with a line drive caught by Alexander at third base on a dive.

Rodriguez walked the first two hitters in the sixth, but he escaped the jam with an inning-ending double play. The veteran left-hander allowed four hits and was able to dance around four walks en route to a win.

Arizona’s starting pitching has been terrific during the winning streak:

• Ryne Nelson: 6 IP, 1 ER on Wednesday
• Nabil Crismatt: 5.2 IP, 2 ER on Thursday
• Zac Gallen: 6 IP, 0 ER on Friday
• Rodriguez: 6 IP, 0 ER on Saturday

The bullpen also held its own with one earned run in three innings. Andrew Saalfrank recorded a 1-2-3 eighth inning, and Jake Woodford did the same in the ninth.

Arizona, held to one hit through six innings, finished with eight knocks, benefitting from multi-hit efforts from Carroll, Alexander and Vargas.

Up next for Diamondbacks

The series concludes on Sunday at 1:10 p.m. MST.

Brandon Pfaadt (5.24 ERA) gets the start for Arizona, while the D-backs will have to face Dodgers right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto (2.90 ERA).
