Arizona Diamondbacks catcher James McCann was reinstated from the injured list on Monday, setting him up to make a return after going down with a quad injury on May 18.
The D-backs optioned fellow catcher Adrian Del Castillo to open the spot for McCann’s return.
The 36-year-old McCann slashed .203/.217/.254 in 21 games before his injury. Along with Gabriel Moreno, he will provide the Diamondbacks with a proven veteran behind the plate for a pitching staff that’s gone through its ups and downs this season.
McCann played in three rehab games with Triple-A Reno in advance of his reinstatement.
Del Castillo, who has played in 120 games for Arizona over the past three seasons, is going through his worst MLB stretch.
The 26-year-old was batting .185 with 48 strikeouts, 12 walks and just nine extra-base hits in 51 games this year.

I think a veteran catcher like McCann will benefit the pitchers more so than Del Castillo. Neither of them is a threat in the batters box but behind the plate, McCann is better right now.
Should have sent Smith down instead of Del Castillo.
These four are starting tonight:
McCann
Kepler
Smith
