For the third season in a row, the Arizona Diamondbacks in late September tried to position themselves to finish with an NL Wild Card playoff spot.
On Friday, the D-backs lost to the San Diego Padres, which paired with a Cincinnati Reds win ended their playoff hopes.
It’s been a roller coaster to have found themselves in the mix this late into the year.
By taking an Aug. 1 loss to restart after a sell-off at the trade deadline, the D-backs fell to 51-59.
Their sixth loss in a row put them a season-high eight games under .500. They responded with a 9-3 stretch from there, with wild swings of six winning streaks of three or more games and three losing streaks of three or more games.
All in all, the Diamondbacks have been within five games of .500 one way or the other for all but nine games this season. Deep into September, they were among a busy bunch of similarly average teams still in the hunt for the third NL Wild Card spot.
The Mets and Reds remain alive in the race.

No, I'm ignoring nothing. I am saying if you thought this was possible after Puk and Martinez went down in the first 2 months then you were drunk. They've done an impressive job considering they lost TWO legitimate closers. And they've been one of the better teams in the league after Burns went down, and they traded Kelly and Shelby Miller.
Sorry, B, but you must have fallen into the punchbowl of Kool-Aid. "can score with the best of them"? Like today when they could not get anyone home from third with less than 2 out? "can defennd with the best of them"? Like #1 prospect Lawler's 2 errors in the same inning last week? How about TL once again pinch hitting for someone and having the pinch hitter STRIKEOUT? Twice the other night and once (crucially) today.
Im saying we should, as in I wish, be winning games that dont qualify for a save, and take pressure off our BP at the same time.
