Zac Gallen, Corbin Carroll and Ketel Marte dominate Braves to kick off series

Just how the Arizona Diamondbacks would draw it up, Zac Gallen cruised through seven innings while Corbin Carroll and Ketel Marte each homered twice against the Atlanta Braves in an 8-3 road win on Tuesday.

Gallen allowed one earned run, four hits and one walk. He only struck out four batters but consistently drew weak contact (83.8 mph exit velocity), mostly on the ground (14 groundouts). He used fewer than 10 pitches in three separate innings.

Marte and Carroll homered in the same game for the first time this season and reached base a combined nine times. The Diamondbacks scored in five out of nine innings, and seven of their eight runs came via the long ball.

Zac Gallen bounces back vs. Braves

Gallen needed merely 23 pitches to get through three perfect innings, as he retired the first 10 Braves hitters of the game — helped by Carroll making a leaping catch at the wall. Nineteen of those 23 pitches were strikes.

Braves catcher Drake Baldwin hit a solo shot in the fourth, and a fielding error by third baseman Eugenio Suarez ultimately cost Gallen an additional two unearned runs, cutting the Arizona lead to 4-3.

Gallen was able to regroup and retire 10 of the next 12 batters, pushing through the seventh inning for the second time all year (May 6). He needed only 89 pitches to do so.

He entered the game leading the National League with 32 walks, and Tuesday was his first game without multiple walks since April 2 at Yankee Stadium. The right-hander’s ERA improved from 5.54 to 5.13, as Arizona snapped a four-game losing streak on days he pitches.

Considering the uncertainty around ace Corbin Burnes regarding his right elbow inflammation, the D-backs could really use Gallen turning his recent woes around. Tuesday was a positive sign, as he attacked the zone and missed barrels.

With a 5-3 lead, the Diamondbacks had a decision to make on whether to leave Gallen in for the eighth inning against the top of Atlanta’s lineup or turn to Shelby Miller.

They went to Miller, and while he did not quite dot the corners, he got the job done. Two singles set up Matt Olson and Marcell Ozuna with out to steal the game, but Olson struck out and Ozuna flew out to deep center field.

D-backs center fielder Alek Thomas made a heck of a leaping catch going back straight toward the wall.

Carroll then crushed a three-run shot for insurance in the ninth, his 18th of the year, and Ryan Thompson threw a 1-2-3 frame to end the game.

Corbin Carroll and Ketel Marte mash

The Diamondbacks gave Gallen early run support, as Marte blasted a no-doubter in the first inning off Braves starter Spencer Strider. Marte hit two home runs within the first three innings, the second giving the club a 4-0 lead. Marte also moved up to third on the team’s all-time RBIs list.

Carroll smashed his 17th home run of the year in the fifth inning, right after Atlanta cut into the lead and when the D-backs needed to switch up the momentum.

He ranks third in the National League in home runs, one back of Philadelphia’s Kyle Schwarber.

The top two hitters finished the game 6-for-7 with seven RBIs and three walks. Tuesday was the first time in D-backs history in which their first two hitters each homered twice.

With All-Star Game voting opening on Wednesday, Carroll increased his OPS to .914 and Marte to 1.014.

Marte is fourth in MLB in OPS, minimum 100 plate appearances.

Diamondbacks’ next game

The Diamondbacks (29-31) turn to Merrill Kelly with a series win on the line Wednesday evening.

The Braves (27-32) will start left-hander and 2024 Cy Young winner Chris Sale.
