With his save Sunday in Chicago against the MLB-leading Cubs, D-backs’ closer Brad Ziegler set a new franchise-record in consecutive saves.
The right-hander only walked one batter while locking down a much-needed 3-2 win for the D-backs, who are 25-34 following Sunday’s win.
Ziegler’s sitting at 39 consecutive-saves, going 11-11 in saves this season, and taking over a record once held by J.J. Putz.
Putz, who works for the D-backs as a special assistant to the president and CEO of the ballclub, is second all-time in both consecutive-saves with 28 and single-season saves with 45 back in 2011.
The record for most saves in a single season for the D-backs belongs to Jose Valverde, who strung together 47 throughout the 2007 season.
Although Valverde holds the single-season saves record, the most consecutive he put together was 24, which he did in the 2010 season.
Following Sunday’s game, Ziegler’s ERA dropped to a 3.00 through 24 innings with 14 strikeouts.
His next save could come Monday night when the D-backs open up a four-game home-stand against the Tampa Bay Rays, who currently sit dead last in the AL-East.
