ASU and Arizona were both in the newly revealed College Football Playoff rankings ahead of Friday’s Territorial Cup, checking in at No. 20 and No. 25, respectively.
The Sun Devils were No. 25 before their 42-17 win at Colorado on Saturday.
This is the first time Arizona has been ranked under head coach Brent Brennan, following consecutive wins over Colorado, Kansas, No. 25 Cincinnati and Baylor.
This Friday’s edition in the heated rivalry was already going to be the first in years where both teams had winning records, and now both enter the matchup inside the CFP rankings, with Big 12 title hopes still alive for ASU.
The last time both teams had numbers next to their names for the game was 2014, when Arizona was No. 11 and ASU was No. 13.
Three Big 12 teams were ranked ahead of them: No. 5 Texas Tech, No. 11 BYU and No. 13 Utah. None of those three play ranked opponents this week.

In the last six games TCU, Utah, Houston, Iowa State, West Virginia & Colorado, we have been behind to start the game and have failed to score a TD in the 1st quarter. During the 1st couple of games this season, we found ourselves having let up 17 points before 'waking up' in the 2nd half. I used to blame Leavitt for his pre-game jitters and anxiety. But this ASU team is synonymous with slow starts.
U of A's swarming defense is rated #2 in the Big-12 in regards to total yards allowed and points allowed. And is #1 in the least passing yards allowed. ASU better come ready to play in the 1st quarter. Because playing catch-up will be a major task vs U of A.
This is a valid point. I have questioned Leavitt's injuries as a result of running hard and taking hits. Then one game he started to slide in my astonishment. But was not 100% by that time.
This should be one heck of a football game . . . I just wish it was a 1 o'clock or 4 o'clock kick-off instead of 7 PM . . . Ugh.
