‘Did you watch what happened?’ Bobby Hurley T’d up late in Arizona State’s loss to Gonzaga

TEMPE — Arizona State men’s basketball coach Bobby Hurley was called for his first technical foul of the season with nine minutes left in a 77-65 loss to Gonzaga on Friday.

Hurley was reacting to a no-call after ASU center Massamba Diop went to the floor after being blocked by Gonzaga’s Graham Ike.

The coach’s frustrations boiled over 45 seconds after forward Santiago Trouet was T’d up for what appeared to be choice words after a block.

Hurley was asked postgame about the sequence and it became a back-and-forth.

“I’m not gonna comment on it, I’m just not,” Hurley said when asked about his approach to conversations with officials. “Because I could go into this and we could spend 10 or 15 minutes talking about this.

“But I’m not gonna do it tonight.”

The Sun Devils had cut a double-digit deficit to six points shortly before Trouet’s technical.

In the minutes that followed, former ASU guard Adam Miller hit two 3s to gain breathing room against his previous team. While ASU hung around, it was never as close as before his shots (nine) and the win was never at risk for Gonzaga.

“With all the things that happened and went on in that second half … you’re, like, shocked after some of the mistakes that we made because it’s not just about external things, it’s us,” Hurley said. “It was remarkable with all that went on that we still were at nine and had a chance if we got a stop.”

Miller finished with 10 points, while former GCU wing Tyon Grant-Foster had 14 points and 12 rebounds off the bench in his Valley return for Gonzaga.

The Sun Devils also shot a season-worst 53.3% (13-for-23) on free throws. They made 70% and 75% at the line in their first two games.

ASU (2-1) got out to a hot start with 7-for-14 shooting over the first eight minutes. However, that stretch included some bad looks from 3 that fell, and they became airballs over the 1-for-11 stretch that followed.

Gonzaga (4-0) went on a 24-5 run over that span and took control.

ASU was behind by 13 to start the second half, and it got out to a 12-4 run that included three 3s before the Bulldogs wrestled back the lead.

The matchup was a big opportunity for Diop to show he can play against high-level competition, as Gonzaga’s Ike has been one of the most productive post players in the country in recent years.

Diop started off with great efforts in ball denial against Ike, and he forced multiple first-half turnovers. The Gonzaga star was held scoreless until 9:25 left in the first.

But Diop rode the bench for the final six minutes of the half, with his lack of any rebounds and blocks possibly contributing to the decision.

One of the results of that move was true freshman Kash Polk coming in for defense on the last possession of the first half, having played one minute over the first two games.

Ike posterized Polk as he scored the final seven points of the half for Gonzaga, getting in rhythm after Diop made it tough early.

Diop was more involved in the second half and finished with 11 points, four rebounds and two blocks, still outdone by Ike’s 20 points and nine boards.
