James Harden arrested in Texas on gun-related charge

Cleveland Cavaliers star and Arizona State men’s basketball legend James Harden was arrested on a gun-related charge in Texas, according to the Harris County District Clerk’s Office.

Harden was arrested on one count of unlawful weapon carrying with a gun present in a vehicle, according to the charge filed Saturday.

TMZ and The California Post first reported the Houston arrest, the latter adding that he was taken into police custody at 3:41 a.m. Saturday morning and was released on bond.

A 17-year NBA veteran, Harden was traded to Cleveland this season, where he averaged 20.5 points over 26 regular-season games. The scoring average was his lowest since the 2011-12 season with the Oklahoma City Thunder (16.8) when he won Sixth Man of the Year.

Harden and the Cavaliers were swept in the Eastern Conference Finals by the New York Knicks, who lead the San Antonio Spurs 3-1 in the NBA Finals. His last game was on May 25, less than three weeks prior to the charge.

He played two seasons at ASU (2007-09) and was named a First Team All-American en route to a third-overall NBA Draft selection in 2009, the highest slot for a Sun Devil since Joe Caldwell went second in 1964.
