ASU football cashes in touchdown to Jordyn Tyson after picking off Kansas State’s first pass attempt

ASU football’s defense got out of the gates in a hurry against Kansas State on Saturday, and the offense paid it off with a touchdown.

K-State’s first play from scrimmage was a short run after starting with good field position, and ASU safety Xavion Alford picked off quarterback Avery Johnson after his first pass attempt was tipped up.

Scrambles of 26 and five yards from Sam Leavitt helped get the Sun Devils into the red zone before Leavitt paid off the turnover with a touchdown pass to Jordyn Tyson, his favorite target.

It was a six-play, 49-yard drive, which got an assist from a defensive holding call that gave the Sun Devils first-and-goal.

Tyson caught his second touchdown early in the second quarter, a nicely timed grab safely getting one foot in the end zone for a 30-yard connection. It put ASU up, 14-0.

A fast start was needed, as the Wildcats entered the matchup one of three Big 12 teams undefeated at home.

Cam Skattebo had one rush for two yards on his first drive back in ASU’s lineup, and Kyson Brown had one rush for a loss of three yards. Kansas State entered the game as the conference’s top rushing defense, surrendering just 99 yards per game.

On the Wildcats’ second drive, ASU got a stop with a turnover on downs near midfield.

The Sun Devils held on for a 24-14 win, keeping their Big 12 title hopes alive.
