Jordyn Tyson ruled out for Arizona State-Houston with apparent hamstring injury

TEMPE — Arizona State star receiver Jordyn Tyson was ruled out for Saturday’s game against Houston due to an apparent hamstring injury, coach Kenny Dillingham said at Wednesday’s practice.

Dillingham did not disclose a potential timetable of when Tyson could return.

“I’m not ready to comment on that right now,” Dillingham said at Wednesday’s practice. “This is something I’m trying to protect him from himself. I mean that dude’s a competitor out there playing at the end of last game making plays, so this is something that we’re making the decision to kinda protect him from him a little bit because he’s such a competitor.”

Tyson reached for his right hamstring after making a cut on a route away from Chamon Metayer’s 12-yard reception in the third quarter of ASU’s 26-22 win over Texas Tech. He remained down in the end zone after the play as trainers stretched out his right leg.

He was back on the field after missing two plays and caught a two-yard touchdown to end the drive.

“Probably the first wide receiver taken in the draft and he’s battling for his team,” Dillingham said of Tyson at Tuesday’s practice. “What NFL team wouldn’t want that kid who battled through that?

“He wasn’t thinking about his personal career. He was thinking about winning that football game for his teammates. If that’s not somebody that you want in your football team, I don’t know what is.”

Tyson had a clutch 33-yard pickup on fourth-and-two to help set up the game-winning touchdown, and he was visibly hampered by the injury as he ran with the ball.

Widely projected as the No. 1 wide receiver in the 2026 NFL Draft, Tyson finished the upset win with 10 catches for 105 yards and the score.

He is the Big 12’s leader in catches (57), receiving yards (628) and touchdowns (eight) through seven games.

He is also within striking distance of the ASU single-season records for catches (87) and touchdowns (14), set by Shaun McDonald and Doug Allen, respectively.

Tyson has 75% of the catches by an ASU wide receiver this season.

“I think a bunch of people have to step up,” Dillingham said at Wednesday’s practice. “You can’t just replace Jordyn Tyson with one person. You have to have a group and a team effort to replace 10, 15 yards at a time.”

Tyson missed the 2024 postseason due to a collarbone injury suffered in the Territorial Cup. He bulked up ahead of this season, naming injury prevention as the biggest reason.

He rarely saw the field during the 2023 season as he battled knee injuries after transferring from Colorado.

Other Arizona State injury updates, Houston outlook

Quarterback Sam Leavitt was listed as “probable” and defensive lineman Prince Dorbah was upgraded to “questionable” on the Big 12 availability report released Friday. Dorbah had exited play in the second half of the Texas Tech game last week and was initially listed as “doubtful.”

Defensive backs Myles Rowser and Adrian “Boogie” Wilson were both listed as questionable for Saturday’s game. Dillingham said the pair has not gotten very many reps at practice.

Linebacker Jordan Crook was also listed as questionable, as Dillingham also alluded to.

For Houston, defensive lineman Carlos Allen Jr., an interior player with 46 tackles this season, was upgraded from questionable to probable. He logged his first sack of the year in a win against Arizona last week.
