Phoenix Zoo rhino picks Boise State to beat Penn State in Fiesta Bowl CFP quarterfinal

A 10-year-old Phoenix Zoo rhino, "Chutti," will select the winner of the Valley-based Fiesta Bowl on Monday.

Phoenix Zoo rhino, “Chutti,” chose Boise State as his Fiesta Bowl winner over Penn State in the Valley-based College Football Playoff quarterfinal.

The single-horned creature interacted with playoff-team decorated boxes in his habitat for the fourth year running. Whichever box Chutti nudged or smelled first was the predicted loser, rather than the winner.

The 10-year-old male enters this year’s Fiesta Bowl, which features No.3-seed Boise State and No. 6 seed Penn State, with a 1-2 record. He correctly chose Oregon over Liberty last season in what ended up being a decisive 45-6 victory for the Bo Nix-led Ducks.

When is the Fiesta Bowl and how can I watch?

The 2024 Vrbo Fiesta Bowl will be played Dec. 31 at 5:30 p.m. at the Arizona Cardinals’ home, State Farm Stadium.

The game will be streamed on ESPN. Penn State is favored by 10.5 points, per FanDuel, and ESPN Analytics gives the Nittany Lions a 64.8% chance of moving on to the CFP semifinals.

No. 4-seed Arizona State, on the other side of the playoff bracket, will face No. 5-seed Texas in the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl the next day from Atlanta. Fans who can’t make the trip can enhance their viewing experience by taking in the action at one of two Harkins Theatres in Tempe and Scottsdale.
