The Arizona Wildcats football program has hired 35-year-old play-caller and former Texas Tech quarterback Seth Doege as its next offensive coordinator.
John Brice of FootballScoop first reported the two sides were finalizing a deal to bring Doege to Tucson and onto head coach Brent Brennan’s staff. Doege replaces Dino Babers, whom Arizona announced would not return after a 4-8 season.
“We are really excited to welcome Seth and his family to Tucson,” head coach Brent Brennan said in a release. “Seth is a young, innovative offensive mind whose experience as a player and coach will bring value to our offense and coaching staff.”
“Doege has worked with some of the best offensive minds in college football and Doege has deep ties to Texas and California, which are two of our biggest recruiting areas.”
Doege spent the 2024 season as Marshall’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, his first season as an OC. The Thundering Herd went on to score 31.8 points per game this season, which ranks 40th in FBS, and gain 201.7 rushing yards per game, which ranks 20th in the country.
Marshall is 10-3 this year with a Sun Belt title game victory and will play in the Independence Bowl. Doege was nominated for the Broyles Award honoring the best assistant coach in the country.
Doege played quarterback at Texas Tech from 2008-12, where he was a Davey O’Brien Award semifinalist in 2012. He played for Air Raid architect Mike Leach in his first two collegiate seasons.
After a stint on the Atlanta Falcons practice squad, Doege played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the Canadian Football League before turning to coaching.
His coaching career began at Bowling Green from 2016-18 as a graduate assistant, wide receivers coach and special teams coordinator. USC hired him after the 2018 season as an offensive quality control analyst under head coach Clay Helton. He spent three years with the Trojans, taking over as tight ends coach in 2021 before Ole Miss hired him as an analyst in 2022 for head coach Lane Kiffin.
Doege spent a season as the tight ends coach for Purdue in 2023 before Marshall hired him.
Arizona’s Brent Brennan takes step toward filling out 2025 coaching staff
Babers lost his play-calling duties following the team’s blowout loss to Kansas State on Sept. 13, as tight ends coach and passing game coordinator Matt Adkins stepped into the role during a bye week.
Brennan said on a media Zoom call he wanted to hire an offensive coordinator who would help develop quarterback Noah Fifita, whom the head coach said has every intention to return for his junior campaign.
Marshall quarterback Braylon Braxton completed 60.2% of his passes for 1,624 yards, 19 touchdowns and two interceptions this season playing for Doege. He also ran for 610 yards and four scores.
Arizona also announced that defensive coordinator Duane Akina and special teams coordinator Danny Gonzales will remain on staff with different titles, so the program will continue its search to fill out the coaching staff.
