Cardinals’ Josh Sweat, 3 others placed on PUP list to start training camp
Offensive lineman Paris Johnson Jr., tight end Tip Reiman and cornerback Garrett Williams join Josh Sweat on the PUP list to start training camp.

GLENDALE — Arizona Cardinals pass rusher Josh Sweat was placed on the active/physically unable to perform list with training camp getting underway Thursday.
Players can be activated off the PUP list at any time during training camp. Once they come off the list, they cannot go back on it.
If a player remains on the active/PUP list at roster cutdown day, they are then transferred to the reserve/PUP list and must miss at least four games.
Head coach Mike LaFleur said Sweat is dealing with a knee issue but is more about maintenance.
Cornerback Garrett Williams (knee), tight end Tip Reiman (foot) and offensive lineman Paris Johnson Jr. were also placed on the PUP list.
Sweat was absent throughout organized team activities before showing up for mandatory minicamp this offseason. He did not take part in the lone practice day during minicamp. Head coach Mike LaFleur was not concerned with his nonparticipation.
News of his addition on the PUP comes after trade whispers — that Arizona later refuted — centered around him and the team this offseason.
Johnson is another surprise addition to the PUP list after he got work in throughout OTAs and minicamp. He’s expected to anchor the left side of the line this year.
The lineman is dealing with knee maintenance similar to Sweat, LaFleur said.
Williams, meanwhile, went down with a torn Achilles last December and has been on the mend ever since.
Despite the designation, head coach Mike LaFleur last month was optimistic about Williams returning sometime during camp.
“We got great news on Garrett. That will not happen for him to be back right (for the start of training camp), but when I first got here, it was like an October, November (return),” LaFleur said. “Now, we’re talking about getting in training camp and getting him going.
“He’s put so much good work in, what a special human being he is and what a really good player that this defense missed last year when he went down.”
Williams is a vital piece to the Cardinals defense as the nickel cornerback. He’s started 27 of 35 games played and has recorded 127 career tackles, four interceptions and 16 passes defensed.
While he continues his ramp up toward a return, veteran Sean Murphy-Bunting is the player to watch at nickel for the Cardinals.
Reiman has been working his way back from an ankle injury suffered in Week 4.
He was present for the team’s offseason work, though only watched from the sideline in his bare feet.
Reiman getting back to full strength would be a huge plus for Arizona’s offense.
While he doesn’t wow on the stat sheet, he has earned the title of honorary offensive lineman for his blocking prowess.
He is a guy LaFleur is excited to get to work with.

The PUP is intended to be used at the start of training camp for players with injuries occurring the prior season or, at least, prior to camp. It's a legit tool for players injured last season (Reiman, Williams, Johnson Jr) who aren't quite ready to participate.
Reiman and Williams are understandable; Johnson Jr., maybe given the knee issue. Sweat? C'mon.... unless there's more info on his "injury", maybe he should be on the MUP (mentally unable to perform) list?
PUP list in training camp? Really? Trade or cut them ALL! This has gone beyond stupid!!! So sick of this crap!!!!!!!!!!
