Cardinals’ Jacoby Brissett back practicing to start camp. Is a contract resolution on the horizon?

GLENDALE — And the plot thickens.

After staying away from nearly all of the Arizona Cardinals’ offseason work, veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett is expected to be back practicing during the first day of training camp.

“He’s here, he’s under contract and it’s the first day of practice,” head coach Mike LaFleur said when asked why Brissett was practicing despite not having a new deal.

LaFleur adds the two sides continue to have “productive” contract talks.

With the two sides unable to come to a contract agreement before the start of camp, a hold-in from Brissett seemed like the logical next move in the contract saga.

After all, Brissett had already done that during Arizona’s mandatory minicamp. While he returned to Tempe, he took in the lone practice day from the side.

Brissett’s decision to practice could mean the saga is heading toward a conclusion.

According to Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro, $15 million for the season would get the deal done.

If he were to get that number, that would sandwich Brissett between Pittsburgh’s Aaron Rodgers ($22.5 million) and Las Vegas’ Fernando Mendoza ($14.3 million) in average money.

Brissett is coming off a 2025 season where he went 1-11 as a starter filling in for former franchise quarterback Kyler Murray.

The record stands out like a sore thumb, but Brissett was able to get the most out of Arizona’s top playmakers Trey McBride and Michael Wilson.

He entered the offseason as Arizona’s expected Week 1 starter. Even when the team brought in Gardner Minshew II, it was to back up Brissett.

Despite that thinking, Brissett is expected to make just $1.5 million in guaranteed money compared to Minshew’s $2.9 million, according to OverTheCap.

However the contract talks come to an end, safety Budda Baker is just glad Brissett is back in the fold and actually getting to work.

“At the end of the day, I want the best guys to be on the field,” Baker said when clarifying his cryptic tweet regarding Brissett’s ongoing contract talks with the team. “I just want everyone to be on the field. If you’re signed with the Arizona Cardinals, be on the field, get work in, grind, take it one day at a time.

“At the end of the day, you’re only going to get better practicing. Just the ability to have him even practicing is going to be good for him because he hasn’t practiced at all. Hopefully he’s with the 1s so I can pick him off.”
