What to make of Jacoby Brissett’s return to Cardinals minicamp

TEMPE — The big question surrounding the Arizona Cardinals’ mandatory minicamp practice on Tuesday wasn’t about whether quarterback Jacoby Brissett was going to be there.

That was answered Monday through reporting and Arizona’s social media team.

It was instead centered on his on-field participation (if any) and if a hold-in was next amid the journeyman quarterback’s contract negotiations.

Through one day of mandatory work, that appears to be where things stand.

Much like during organized team activities, it was quarterbacks Gardner Minshew II, Kedon Slovis and Carson Beck getting all the reps during the open portion of practice.

The big difference? Brissett was taking in the sights from the side.

“We’ll just take it one day at a time,” first-year head coach Mike LaFleur said of the veteran. “You guys saw what it was today. We’ll re-evaluate.”

LaFleur added Brissett has been in attendance for meetings since returning to the facility after staying away from voluntary team activities amid a request for a pay raise.

The head coach declined to go into further detail regarding Brissett’s status, saying he was keeping that between himself and the quarterback while adding there’s a ramp-up process for everyone returning to the team after time away. The same goes for pass rusher Josh Sweat, who like Brissett, did not take part in any of Arizona’s voluntary work.

“There’s a lot of lead-up time to get out there in the practice. I don’t care if you’re a punter, a water boy or whatnot. If you haven’t been playing football, you want to make sure you’re doing the right part by those guys,” LaFleur said.

How Brissett’s participation changes Wednesday remains to be seen, though expect much of the same unless a new deal is in place.

How his teammates feel about him, however, hasn’t changed despite his earlier absences from voluntary work.

“That’s our guy through and through. We’re behind him 100%,” offensive lineman Paris Johnson Jr. said.

“Guys are excited that he’s here,” tight end Trey McBride added. “Guys want him to be here and obviously have him in the building. He’s working through some things on his own. We totally understand that. You could just tell his presence that he brought today being in the building was awesome.”
