The Arizona Coyotes announced on Thursday night that the team and longtime head coach Dave Tippett parted ways.
The news comes after Tippett spent eight seasons at the helm in Arizona, compiling a 282-257-83 record with three playoff appearances in his first three seasons with the Coyotes.
But it wasn’t enough, as growing differences between Tippett and the organization ultimately led to their split. So after eight seasons of ups and downs, here’s Coach Tippett’s coaching career with the Coyotes, by the numbers:
.341
No Tippett-led Coyotes team had a worse winning percentage than in 2014-15. That year, Arizona went 24-50-8 to post a .341 winning percentage. The fewest wins came in the lockout-shortened season of 2012-13 (21), but Arizona had a .531 winning percentage that year.

The Coyotes’ best finish in the division under Tippett came in the head coach’s third season. It was in 2011-12 that the Coyotes finished in first place, boasting a 42-27-13 record.

Tippett coached just one captain in Arizona: Shane Doan. Prior to Doan’s unexpected departure from the team this week, the 40-year-old had been the longest-tenured captain in the league.
2
Injuries notwithstanding, Tippett had just two starting goaltenders during his time with the Coyotes: Ilya Bryzgalov and Mike Smith. He would have been the head coach to a third Coyotes starting netminder if he had continued as coach, since Smith was traded to the Flames last week.

Arizona also saw just two general managers during Tippett’s tenure. GMs Don Maloney and John Chayka each were GM while Tippett was in the Valley.
50
Tippett’s winningest season with the team came in his first. After spending six seasons as the head coach of the Dallas Stars, Tippett came to Arizona to replace Wayne Gretzky and immediately led the Coyotes to the playoffs. Their 50-25-7 record was the best such mark Tippett would reach in his tenure in the desert.
107
Tippett won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s coach of the year in 2009-10 with the Coyotes recording 107 points in the standings that year.
2011-12
The Coyotes’ deepest playoff run also came in 2011-12, when Tippett and the ‘Yotes went all the way to the Western Conference Finals but fell short of a Stanley Cup berth to the Los Angeles Kings.
