DOUG AND WOLF

I hope Johnny Manziel figures it out off the field

I hate chocolate but I like candy bars. I love tomatoes. I love cheese. I love Caprese. I hate tomato soup and grilled cheese. I know. I can’t explain it either.

In sports, I root for losers to lose and winners to win. I don’t mean that from a team concept. I have the teams I root for and that doesn’t change. I’m referring to people that are winners or losers.

Ian Kennedy is a winner as a person so I root for him, even though he’s losing a lot on the field.

Johnny Manziel is a loser as a person so I root for him to lose, even though, on the field, he’s won a lot.

Bar fights, fake IDs, being a no-show for kids and the Mannings, flashing tons of cash in casinos, heavy partying, blasting those that dare give him a parking ticket are all signs of an enabled, pompous jerk. I love rooting against the Johnny Footballs of the world. I loved watching Ryan Leaf fall on his face and I’ll enjoy Manziel’s fall as well.

Think about this, Johnny Manziel is the only person on the planet who’s made an entire career out of embarrassing Nick Saban. Do you really think Saban is going to let that happen again? Allow yourself to grasp the carnage that the Alabama defense is going to leave in College Station this year.

I also root for comeback stories because being a loser now doesn’t mean people can’t change. If Johnny Manziel announced that he’s been incredibly immature and apologizes publicly for bringing more negative attention to A&M than positive, that’s a start. If he starts spending more time in the film room than the bar, he’ll have my respect. Maybe Mr. Football will come out and say, “My name is John. Whenever I disrespect my parents, coaches, teammates and University again, I want you to write about what Johnny Football did because I don’t deserve the last name my father gave me. I hope to earn the right for everyone to call me John.”

I’d love to see this kid figure it out. Only one player in college football history has ever won the Heisman Trophy twice. I hope Johnny Football fails miserably in his quest to become the second because he’s not half the man the two-time winner is. However, I’ll be the first person to buy an autographed picture of Archie Griffin and John Manziel if the latter ever appears.

Go away Johnny.

Gig ’em John.
