Hornacek: Warren is still out for at least a week

LISTEN: Jeff Hornacek, Suns head coach

Phoenix Suns rookie forward T.J. Warren will be out at least another week with a small crack in his thumb, according to head coach Jeff Hornacek.

It was reported last week that Warren, the first of Phoenix’s three first-round picks in the 2014 NBA Draft, would miss time with the injury, and there was no timetable for his return.

Hornacek was a guest Tuesday with Doug & Wolf on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM, and he confirmed that the player will miss at least the first few games of the season.

“He’s probably going to be out another week, week and a half,” said Hornacek. “He’s got a crack in his finger. They want that to heal. As many times as you are hit in the hand during the game, we don’t want to aggravate it and re-break it so we’ll be patient with him.”

The Suns will already be thin at forward to start the season, with P.J. Tucker suspended for the first three games after a DUI arrest in May. With a guard-heavy roster, the Suns are expected to employ a consistent small-ball lineup, and will need to move other wing players to bigger positions to make up for the absences.

“We’re deep enough without him,” said Hornacek. “With P.J. getting suspended the first three games, it makes it tough, but we can fight Gerald over there for now.”

The Suns’ season begins on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. when they host the Los Angeles Lakers.
