The Arizona Cardinals claimed linebacker Pita Taumoepenu off waivers from the San Francisco 49ers, the team announced Wednesday.

To make room for him on the roster, the team released fellow linebacker James Folston Jr.

Taumoepenu played four games for San Francisco last season, recording three tackles. Prior to that, he played two games in 2017 without registering on the stat sheet.

The 25-year-old was drafted in the sixth round (202nd overall) in 2017 after playing two seasons as a defensive end at the University of Utah. It was in the Pac-12 that Taumoepenu had 45 tackles in 16 games, 15 of those for loss to go with 13 sacks. He also had three forced fumbles and a fumble recovery in college.

Folston played four years at Pitt and signed as an undrafted free agent after this year’s draft.
