Cornerback Chris Jones re-signed with the Arizona Cardinals practice squad Friday after being released by the team two days prior and then clearing waivers.
The Cardinals also released cornerback Andre Chachere from the practice squad to make room for Jones.
Arizona initially released the second-year pro after picking up veteran corner Trevor Williams off waivers.
On Friday, Cardinals general manager Steve Keim told 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station’s Doug & Wolf that releasing Jones in favor of Williams was about adding a more experienced player to a depleted defensive backfield.
“This was an opportunity to claim a player who has started a number of games in the National Football League and we had good grades on in our pro system,” Keim said of Williams. “(We) wanted to give him an opportunity. Corners are hard to find, especially ones with starting experience.”
Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury suggested on Wednesday that he hoped the team would be able to re-sign Jones, and that became possible when no team claimed him, which came as a mild surprise.
Jones went undrafted out of Nebraska in 2018. He spent last season with the Cardinals and impressed throughout 2019 training camp. He was the No. 3 cornerback at the start of the regular season due to the suspension to All-Pro Patrick Peterson and a leg injury to Robert Alford.
Jones appeared in nickel packages, and his snaps declined through Week 5. He played in 34% of the Cardinals’ defensive snaps and also contributed on 52% of the special teams snaps.
The 24-year-old recorded nine tackles and a pass defensed this season.
