Garrett ripped off the helmet of Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph and used it to club him on top of the head with just eight seconds remaining in the game.
“I just can’t allow myself to slip like that,” Garrett said to reporters.
Garrett was then driven to the ground by Steelers lineman David DeCastro and then punched and kicked by another Steelers lineman, Maurkice Pouncey.
Players from both sidelines came storming onto the field in a melee and when the dust settled; Garrett, Pouncey and Browns defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi were all ejected.
“I thought it was pretty cowardly and bush league,” Rudolph said in his post game press confrence.
Fines and suspensions are likely to come down on all three players and possibly others.
“I hurt the whole team with what I did, I hope it doesn’t come back to bite us,” Garrett said.
The two teams, AFC North division rivals, are scheduled to meet in Week 13.
Browns head coach Freddie Kitchens was also asked about the incident following the game.
“I don’t condone fighting,” Kitchens said. “It’s a penalty.”
The Browns have been wrapped up in drama all season, and that was the case again Thursday as the team released wide receiver Antonio Callaway just hours before kickoff.
Cleveland won the game 21-7 to improve to 4-6 on the season, one game behind the Steelers who now sit at 5-5.
