Report: Suspended Josh Shaw bet on a Cardinals game in parlay

Arizona Cardinals cornerback Josh Shaw was suspended last week through at least the 2020 season for betting on NFL games, and ESPN reported Monday that his bets included a three-team parlay with a Cardinals game.

ESPN staff writer David Purdum wrote that Shaw made a parlay bet at Caesars in Las Vegas on the second halves of three games that week. The parlay included the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who were playing the Cardinals. In other words, he bet against his own team, according to this report.

Shaw’s bet lost, the report said.

Shaw was open about his line of work when filling out his application for a betting account with Caesars, even listing “professional football player” as his occupation, the sources said.

Purdum also pointed out that gambling scandals involving “fixing” games are usually not bet on with a parlay, because parlays need multiple picks to hit. The NFL’s statement said the league’s investigation “uncovered no evidence indicating any inside information was used or that any game was compromised in any way.”

He can petition for reinstatement into the league on or after Feb. 15, 2021.

Shaw has been on IR with a shoulder injury this season and has not played a game for the Cardinals. The cornerback previously played for Tampa Bay, along with Kansas City and Cincinnati.

A fourth-round pick by the Bengals in 2015, Shaw played college football at USC.
