We didn’t think it would already be Mock Draft season in Arizona during the second weekend of January, but the Cardinals’ less-than-inspirational close to the 2020 season has brought us here.
This year on ArizonaSports.com, we’ll be providing a weekly snapshot of the trends in all the latest mock drafts from around the country and what that could mean for the Cardinals. Typically, the updated piece will be published on Friday afternoons.
Since the draft order was set following the conclusion of the campaign (and we now know the Cardinals will select 16th), we’ve added 16 mocks to the running total that will also be updated between now and April 29.
In our first group of mocks, South Carolina defensive back Jaycee Horn is the player most linked to Arizona. Horn shows up in four projections.
Horn, who is the son of former NFL receiver Joe Horn (remember the cell phone hidden in the goalpost padding?), just finished up his redshirt junior season at South Carolina. He saw action in seven games, registering 16 total tackles along with two interceptions and a team-leading six pass breakups for a Gamecocks team that finished 2-8. Horn opted out of the remainder of the season to focus on draft prep after South Carolina fired head coach Will Muschamp in November.
The 21-year-old stands 6-foot-1 and weighs 200 pounds. He enjoyed his best game of 2020 in a 30-22 win over Auburn in October when he picked off two passes and had four pass breakups.
Horn was also a third-team PFF All-SEC selection following the 2020 season.
Also showing up linked to the Cardinals in more than one mock this week were Alabama wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, Florida tight end Kyle Pitts and USC guard Alijah Vera-Tucker.
Also of note, ESPN’s Todd McShay released his first mock of the season during the week, and had Arizona selecting uber-productive Clemson running back Travis Etienne at number-16.
