Former Arizona Cardinals wide receiver and special teamer Trent Sherfield is reportedly headed to NFC West rival San Francisco 49ers on a one-year deal, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.
Garafolo adds that the move gives Sherfield a chance to carve out a bigger role as a receiver with Kendrick Bourne signing with the New England Patriots this offseason.
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported on March 12 that the WR would not be tendered by the Cardinals, allowing him to enter free agency unrestricted.
Sherfield entered the league as an undrafted rookie with the Cardinals in 2018. He provided added depth on the roster, recording 28 catches on 48 targets for 340 yards and a touchdown over the past three seasons.
In 2020, Sherfield played only 79 (7%) of the team’s offensive snaps.
He got a lot more action on special teams, ranking sixth on the Cardinals with 222 reps.
Sherfield is the latest Cardinal to take his talents elsewhere after starting running back Kenyan Drake signed a two-year deal with the Las Vegas Raiders earlier Thursday.
With the addition of A.J. Green on Wednesday, the Cardinals now have DeAndre Hopkins, Christian Kirk, KeeSean Johnson and Andy Isabella in the wide receiver room for 2021.
