PHOENIX – The Arizona Diamondbacks moved one step closer to getting a key piece of their starting rotation back.
Manager Torey Lovullo said Zac Gallen threw out to 90 feet on Monday and will throw a bullpen session on Tuesday as he works his way back from a UCL injury that has kept him on the injured list since May 12.
Lovullo in a Zoom press conference prior to Monday’s game against the New York Mets said Gallen’s progress was on par with the typical build-up of when pitchers and catchers report to spring training.
“I think it’s pretty consistent with people getting back into play,” Lovullo said. “I know that we’re going to obviously continue to get his input and get a feel for what he’s doing, but it seems pretty consistent for me.”
It has been a tough season of injuries so far for both the D-backs and Gallen personally.
This is his second stint on the IL after suffering a hairline fracture in his forearm during a spring training batting practice session.
Prior to going on the IL for the second time, Gallen was once again emerging as the ace of the pitching staff. He was 1-1 with a 3.04 ERA and 32 strikeouts in five starts.
The D-backs are 2-15 since he was placed on the IL.
