GLENDALE — The Arizona Cardinals worked out a familiar face on Monday, and then quickly brought him back.

Ahead of the team’s Monday edition of training camp, former Cardinals defensive tackle and current free agent Corey Peters worked out with the team. After NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Peters is expected to re-join his team on a one-year deal, the Cardinals later announced the official news.

“We’ll see, we’ll continue to bring in different position groups, work them out and try to upgrade the roster throughout,” head coach Kliff Kingsbury said Monday prior to the announcement. “It was good to see him. I know everybody was excited to have him around today.

“He looked good, he looked really good,” the coach added. “He moved around well. I think he’s in good shape and looked healthy.”

The former Cardinals captain Peters recorded 15 tackles and two sacks through nine games last season before going down with a season-ending knee injury. The nose tackle was placed on the injured reserve list in mid-November.

Peters, 32, originally joined Arizona as a free agent in 2015 but missed that season after suffering a torn Achilles. Peters returned to put together productive years in 2016 and 2017, then signed a three-year extension toward the end of the 2017 regular season.

The veteran earned captainship for the first time with Arizona in 2018 and has also been heavily involved in the community.

Peters broke into the league with the Atlanta Falcons as a third-round pick in 2010 and played there through the 2014 season before joining the Cardinals.

The news of Peters’ workout comes on the same day that it was announced that Jordan Phillips was dealing with a “minor thing,” per Kingsbury.

While Phillips will miss Monday’s training camp session, Kingsbury said that he does not expect him to be out much longer.

When Peters went down with his injury, the Cardinals turned to a number of players to fill along the defensive line, including Domata Peko Jr., Rashard Lawrence and Leki Fotu. The latter two remain on the roster in 2021, and the team also brought in veteran interior tackle Xavier Williams to add depth.
