Coyotes’ Schmaltz on franchise-record points run: ‘Everything was going in’

Arizona Coyotes forward Nick Schmaltz has been on an absolute heater over the team’s past two games.

Against the Ottawa Senators on Saturday, Schmaltz racked up a career-high seven points (two goals and five assists) before turning around and recording four points (two goals and two assists) Tuesday at the Detroit Red Wings.

His 11 total points are the most tallied by a Coyote/Winnipeg Jet over a two-game span in franchise history.

“It was pretty crazy during the game,” Schmaltz told Arizona Sports’ Burns & Gambo when asked Wednesday about the seven-point outburst. “You don’t really think about it, just seemed like everything was going in, everything I touched was going in.

“It was pretty cool. We got together after the game, had a little fun after that win. All the guys were super pumped for me and obviously can’t do it without my linemates and teammates and everyone involved.

The back-to-back efforts from Schmaltz also helped the Coyotes pick up consecutive wins, outscoring their opponents 17-7 over two meetings. Arizona is now riding a three-game winning streak ahead of a Thursday matchup against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Coyotes hadn’t won more than two straight games up until this most recent stretch. Only twice did they put up back-to-back wins before these past three contests.

“It’s always fun to win so we’re enjoying it right now,” Schmaltz said. “No one likes losing no matter what you’re going through. … Everyone’s got a little extra jump in their step and everybody’s happier when we’re winning. We’re playing for each other.

“We’re not in the position we want to be in but we’re still coming out fighting every night. If we’re not winning games, we’re right in them. I think that’s the attitude. We’re not gonna give up, we’re not gonna quit despite our position in the standings. … We want to keep it rolling and maybe play spoiler on some of these teams.”

The Coyotes are back in action against the Maple Leafs on Thursday at 5 p.m. Tune to ESPN 620 AM.
