Inside the Box: 1-2 knockout floors Coyotes
After every Phoenix Coyotes game we’ll examine the
box score and provide you with instant analysis. So it’s
time to go Inside the Box for April 18, 2011: Red Wings 4, Coyotes
Two Detroit Red Wings goals within the first three minutes of the first period knocked a hard-skating Coyotes on their heels and they were unable to come back despite good effort at the end of the game. The Wings can sweep the Coyotes with a win on Wednesday night and knock the Coyotes out of the playoff hunt.
The presence of the Coyotes youth. They may have been on the fourth line tonight, but David Schlemko, Andrew Ebbett and Mikkel Boedker played well against a very strong Red Wings team. Especially notable was Kyle Turris, whose energy and spunk kept a lot of plays alive. He registered an assist on the night, as did Boedker.
Early goals. Detroit took an average of 110 seconds into each of the three periods to slip the puck past a clearly struggling Bryzgalov. The Coyotes defense, in a hurry to move up the ice on the attack, let Johan Franzen go free early in the third period for the fatal fourth goal.
This was the first game in the series that Captain Coyote Shane Doan did not register a point. He is tied with defenseman Keith Yandle with four points in the series.
