Chiefs safety Justin Reid takes over at kicker in 1st half vs. Cardinals

Sep 11, 2022, 2:16 PM | Updated: 5:19 pm

The Kansas City Chiefs may have only dressed one kicker for Sunday’s season opener against the Arizona Cardinals, but early returns indicate they have a somewhat capable backup.

Harrison Butker’s ankle slipped on a kickoff with 9:37 left in the first quarter. He had to be carted off the field.

Safety Justin Reid, whom the Chiefs added this offseason from the Houston Texans, began warming up his leg on the sideline.

Kansas City was quick to call his number, as he trotted on the field after a second touchdown.

Reid booted the extra point, right down the middle.

He came back out for the kickoff and sent the football out of the back of the end zone.

The Cardinals went down 14-0 but answered with a James Conner touchdown run in the second quarter.

The Chiefs bounced back with a touchdown, but Reid missed the ensuing extra point to the right.

Butker was questionable to return with a left ankle injury, but he made a grand return late in the first half.

He hit a 54-yard field goal to give the Chiefs a 23-7 lead.

Reid, though, kept his kickoff job.
