Whisenhunt: QB competition made both guys better

Kevin Kolb seems to have firmly grasped the role of the starting quarterback in Arizona, leading his team to a surprising 4-0 start. But whether keeps the starting job or if it will go back to John Skelton remains up in the air.

After Skelton was sidelined with an injury in the Cardinals’ Week 1 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks, Kolb was called upon to lead the successful game winning drive. Combined with strong performances from Kolb in wins over the New England Patriots, Philadelphia Eagles and Miami Dolphins, it looked like the quarterback controversy fans thought was over had started back up again.

With the Cardinals having a short week of practice before Thursday night’s game against the St. Louis Rams, the starting job will most likely remain Kolb’s for the time being.

Cardinals head coach Whisenhunt said won’t be worrying abut who to start until he’s sure Skelton is ready to play again.

“At some point when we feel, based on what [Skelton] did in practice, he’s ready to go we’ll have a decision to make,” said Whisenhunt. “That’s a decision that we’ll make before the game. I don’t think there’s anybody saying we have to make that change right now.”

After Skelton returned to practice on Wednesday, Whisenhunt said it was nice to see his two quarterbacks back out on the field and looks forward to seeing them battling for the starting spot.

“I think [the QB competition] made both those guys better and I think we’re reaping the dividends of that right now,” said Whisenhunt. “So say whatever you want to say about picking the quarterback and when we picked the quarterback and how it all came down. But, bottom line is we’re 4-0. Kevin has played well for us and he’s done exactly what we’ve expected him to do and we’re pleased about that.”
