With less than a second to spare before a glorified skills competition was to decide their fate, Oliver Ekman-Larsson ensured the Arizona Coyotes’ long home-ice nightmare wouldn’t continue.
Ekman-Larsson’s goal with 0.3 seconds remaining in overtime allowed the ‘Yotes to avoid a shootout, giving them a 2-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers in Glendale on Tuesday to snap a nine-game home losing streak and a five-game overall skid.
Goalie Devan Dubnyk stopped 30 of 31 shots for the Coyotes (11-16-4; 26 points) to out-duel Ben Scrivens, who saved 42 of 44 shots for Edmonton (7-19-6; 20 points).
Here’s how the Coyotes ended their winless skid with a fraction of a second to spare, by the numbers:
1
The Oilers scored the game’s first goal in the opening period, but forward Brandon McMillan scored his first goal of the season 10:24 into the second period to pull the Coyotes even.
2
The Coyotes didn’t allow the Oilers to spend much time on the power play Tuesday, as they committed just two penalties for a total of four minutes in the box.
3
Call him Mr. Clutch: Ekman-Larsson has an NHL-best three overtime goals on the season.
5
The win was Dubnyk’s fifth of the season. The fifth-year pro is a healthy 5-2-2 for the year and has a 2.74 goals allowed average.
17
The Coyotes like playing the men from Alberta, as they have a franchise-record 17-game point streak against the Oilers. Their last regulation loss to Edmonton came Jan. 25, 2011.
27
The Coyotes had 27 shots on goal in the second period, a franchise record. Their previous high was 25 against the Calgary Flames in 1982.
