The Arizona Cardinals elevated kicker Chad Ryland from the practice squad ahead of Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers, as veteran kicker Matt Prater is questionable with a left knee issue.
Arizona used its second standard elevation on offensive lineman Charlie Heck.
Ryland signed with the Cardinals’ practice squad on Wednesday. Head coach Jonathan Gannon said on Friday Prater was dealing with some soreness but was doing “pretty good.”
“He’ll tell me if he’s good to go,” Gannon told reporters. “He knows his body better than anybody.”
Ryland spent last season with the New England Patriots, who selected the kicker in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft out of Maryland.
The 24-year-old made 16-of-25 field-goal attempts with a long of 56 yards, although he only converted on 7-of-14 tries beyond 40 yards. He hit 24-of-25 extra points.
The Patriots cut Ryland ahead of Week 1.
Prater has hit all six of his field-goal attempts this year with a long of 57 yards. The 40-year-old is in his 18th NFL season and fourth with the Cardinals.
Sunday’s game in Santa Clara will start at 1:05 p.m. on 98.7 and the Arizona Sports app.
