The Phoenix Suns cut their roster to 14 players Saturday by waiving center Henry Sims.
Sims played sparingly in the six preseason games and scored 10 points to go with seven rebounds. The fourth-year pro out of Georgetown spent the 2014-15 season with the Philadelphia 76ers, where he averaged 8.0 points and 4.9 rebounds per game.
The cut means Phoenix loses depth behind centers Tyson Chandler and Alex Len, but it also shows that the team feels confident that power forwards Markieff Morris and Jon Leuer can slide to the center spot.
The Suns’ decision to cut Sims also is a good sign for Cory Jefferson, the athletic second-year pro from Baylor. The 6’10 forward averaged 3.7 points and 2.9 rebounds in 11 minutes per game with Brooklyn last season. Like Sims, Jefferson signed a non-guaranteed deal to join the Suns in camp. His athleticism, strength that could allow him to play center, and improved shooting ability make him an intriguing fit on the Phoenix roster.
With Jefferson on board, the Suns’ roster currently stands at 14 players with four days remaining before a Wednesday opener against the Dallas Mavericks.
