Anthony Bennett was the number-one overall draft pick just three years ago.
That might have been the last positive thing that has happened in Bennett’s basketball career.
The Toronto Raptors, Bennett’s third team in three seasons, waived him Monday after he saw action in just 19 games.
It’s gotten so bad for Bennett that FoxSports.com published an article wondering if he’s the worst No. 1 overall pick in NBA history.
Regardless of what’s happened in Bennett’s past, one report indicates there could be teams interested in the 22-year-old forward.
Shams Charania of The Vertical on Yahoo! Sports reported Monday the Suns could take a look at Bennett once he clears waivers.
In three seasons, Bennett has played in just 128 games for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Minnesota Timberwolves and Raptors, carrying career averages of 4.2 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. His rookie season with the Cavs got off to a nightmarish start. In his first nine NBA games, Bennett averaged 1.4 points per game and shot just 14 percent (5-for-35) from the floor.
The pickup could be a good one for the Suns, who are very much in a rebuilding mode after firing head coach Jeff Hornacek in February and trading one of their top players, Markieff Morris, to the Washington Wizards at the deadline.
Kris Humphries, a power forward who was acquired by the Suns in the Morris deal, was waived earlier this week, creating a bit of a void at the power forward position. If signed, Bennett could slide into the spot and get some low-pressure minutes for the rest of the season.
