Gambo: Jay Wright unlikely candidate to become Suns head coach

Villanova coach Jay Wright has every reason to kick the tires on some NBA jobs and see what options are out there. He just won a national championship, is 54 years old and if he ever wanted to bolt for the NBA, now is the time. But it’s unlikely going to happen and I don’t see the Phoenix Suns as an option.

The Suns haven’t made the playoffs in six years, but they don’t need a splash. They need the right coach. Wright is a good teacher of fundamentals and runs a very simple system. He runs around five sets — all NBA sets — but not a lot of the time. He also switches all the time on defense and runs a help-oriented style that would have its issues in the NBA.

Wright is a good coach. He has had a lot of success in 15 years at Villanova. He is a Philly guy.

Tyson Chandler wants interim coach Earl Watson to be the coach, but honestly who cares what Chandler wants? He’s not LeBron James and what he wants doesn’t and shouldn’t matter.

What I’m hearing after making some calls is that Wright is happy at Villanova, and will likely get a nice raise that bumps him into the top-10 of coaching salaries and allows him to stay in college.
