The Diamondbacks went north of the border for their second-round pick in the 2016 MLB Draft.
Arizona used its 52nd overall choice to select catcher Andrew Yerzy a month short of his 18th birthday. The Toronto native, who played at the York Mills Collegiate Institute, is one of the top prospects out of Canada, but he’s also extended his fame internationally as a member of Team Canada and beyond.
Yerzy was a 2015 Under Armour All-American and won the Junior Home Run Derby during MLB’s All-Star weekend last season as well.
The catcher is a Notre Dame commit but if he joins the Diamondbacks’ farm system would be a much-needed addition.
The D-backs have been looking to add catching prospects over the last few seasons, but trade acquisition Peter O’Brien shelved his catching duties to play in the outfield and Rule 5 draft pick Oscar Hernandez, 22, has a ways to go in his own development. Hernandez is currently playing for the Visalia Rawhide.
