At one point, the Phoenix Suns trailed by 30 points.
They never led the Utah Jazz through the first 47 minutes and 57 seconds of their preseason game on Wednesday.
The Jazz led 110-107 with 15 seconds left.
Those are a few facts to set up one good reason to get excited over a preseason NBA game. The Phoenix Suns’ 111-110 win over the Utah Jazz became an exception.
If anything, it was entertaining.
Archie Goodwin drove to the rim with 15 seconds left and laid in an and-one while the Jazz made the inconceivable foul. But with one attempt and down one point, Goodwin’s free throw fell short. The smallest man on the court, 5-foot-10 Tyler Ulis, grabbed the offensive rebound, the Suns pulled the ball back out, and the ball found Goodwin one more time.
The fourth-year shooting guard drove to his left again, slipping past undrafted rookie Marcus Paige with a spin move and taking off at the bottom of the dotted circle to throw down a tomahawk slam with 3 seconds left. Goodwin, who closed with 13 points, defended Utah’s missed jumper on the ensuing possession, and Phoenix walked away with the win.
It wasn’t all that entertaining leading into the wild finish.
The game saw the teams combine for 106 free throws and 79 personal fouls.
The Suns committed 14 first-half turnovers leading to 19 Utah points but only finished with 20 miscues as they rallied from a 46-16 deficit in the second quarter.
Devin Booker, who led the Suns with 20, continued to play after a scare when he tweaked his ankle, while Alex Len, Marquese Chriss and Jared Dudley all fouled out.
